DOC On Campus

Rising to a Growing Challenge

Colleges and universities are facing deepening friction with each passing year, as conflicts within broader society play out on campus. Administrators find it hard to respond evenhandedly to student activism and protests, especially as acts motivated by hate are rising.

Students need increased support in this environment, but some of the tools for this, like diversity programs, face cultural and even legal backlash. So the burden falls increasingly on faculty, a growing number of whom are not protected by tenure.

DOC works with various groups on campus, from faculty, staff and administrators, to student groups, to Extension educators, to develop programs specifically for their college communities. We especially love helping students establish productive civil discourse habits to set them up for their careers and lives.

We focus on:
  • Establishing positive norms for discourse, from the classroom to the quad

  • Practicing skills for conversations of curiosity, with a goal to understand rather than persuade

  • Striving for sustainability, training student leaders to run these programs themselves
